Chapter 9
Industry and Commerce
In 1894 the enterprises in
Ramrock consisted of a bakery, two blacksmith shops,
a seed shop, and three hotels. The Applegates ran
the bakery, which sold bread and cake, and was
located on the site of the present Getty Station.
The Silvers and Clawsons ran the blacksmith shops
which stood where the Friendly's and 7/11 stores are
today on Oak and Maple. Gusterfersons seed
shop was where the Mobil station is today.
The most famous of the three hotels was the
"Do-Drop-Inn" it was well known for its
delicious Fried chicken specials. Many travelers
from Ramford city to Ridgepark stayed at the Inn and
enjoyed its hospitality. The proprietor Dixon
Bennett was the father of the 7th and 12th mayors of
Ramrock.
The other two hotels - the Clarion Inn and the
Foxwood Inn became infamous "road houses"
during prohibition - because several gangsters used
them as offices to direct illegal alcohol production
and distribution.
Important businesses late in the 19th Century were
mills which ground grain, sawed wood and
manufactures simple tools.
The first developers Ramrock Building Company and Roger, Heart, and
Feld Reality (see Chapter 3) and others were responsible
for changing Ramrock into what we see today from the rural farming community
it was at the turn of the century. Some of the most important businesses
in Ramrock are described below.
