Investigation:
Callicoon the Cat
Dr. Galena
is in the middle of morning rounds as he arrives.
Never one to pass up a "teachable moment"
Dr. Galena involves her students in the cat problem.
The students perform a neurological exam which
indicates that there is a problem and Callicoon has
diarrhea. Dr. Galena encourages the students to
question Tony about the circumstances surrounding
Callicoon’s illness; and is very pleased when
Jeffrey Lazell suggests that Callicoon’s blood be
tested for lead - he connected the industrial
setting to the symptoms. The laboratory results
indicate elevated levels of lead in Callicoon’s
blood; Dr. Galena suggests that standard "chelation
therapy" should cure the cat.
Tony Plumbo
is very distressed and concerned about the potential
human health problems associated with exposure to
lead at the Ramalives Battery Recycling Company in
Ramford and at the company’s plants in the
Philippines and Thai Land. He hires an environmental
engineering firm to help assess the situation and
begins to work with officials from Ramford County.
