Tobacco CEO Denies Targeting Asbestos Workers

12/29/2000
Nicholas G. Brookes, chairman and chief executive officer of Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., denied suggestions that his company targeted asbestos workers with its cigarette advertising, the Associated Press reported Dec. 27.

Brookes testified in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, N.Y., in a case brought by sick asbestos workers and their heirs against several tobacco giants.

Brookes was asked about a 1981 marketing effort in which Brown & Williamson workers gave away sample cigarettes outside locations where blue-collar workers might gather.

Brookes said the effort was conducted responsibly. "If there's a suggestion that blue-collar workers are less able to determine whether to choose to smoke or not, I find that somewhat patronizing," he said.
