| Our own Ramford County is a
pristine natural refuge in the midst of one of the nation's most densely
populated areas, a remarkable piece of woodlands, a watershed for
millions, and a tremendous outdoor recreation area. This unbroken
deep-forest habitat is important for the survival of many resident and
migratory species, including black bear, a variety of hawks and songbirds
and many rare invertebrates and plants. Hunting, fishing and hiking
opportunities are available. Recent concerns over the long term effects of Acid Rain in the Ramford area, has led PINE to call for action on the part of our local and state officials. We ask Congresswoman Savers to join with us in calling for such action. Acid Rain is harmful to our environment in three major ways: by contact with plants, by contact with soil and water, by mobilizing trace metals. The effects of acid rain on plants, soil, and water in turn affect other living organisms that depend on them.
The six lakes in and near the Renapi reservation have changed over
the last 15-20 years. There is data showing the reduction in pH and
the decrease in aquatic plant and animal life that have accompanied the
changes in the acidity of the water. Recent hikes on several old
logging roads in the reservation to examine the damage to the forests. We propose that a blue ribbon panel be formed, whose task it is to review the problem of car exhaust. While the catalytic converters that people have on their cars and the smog certificates that they must get each year are a start, the standards are not strict enough. Car exhaust still creates nearly half of the air pollutants in our region, and we believe this must stop. We must seek to reduce the amount of gases that are produced from cars. Oxides of Nitrogen (such as NO and NO2) come mainly from cars, trucks and SUV's, and contribute to overall atmospheric pollution. NOx is shorthand for describing the mixture of these two gases (see formula below). PINE is interested in reducing the emissions from large SUVs like the LAND SHARK. We are asking that the emission standards of large SUV's like the LANDSHARK be raised to reduce overall emissions. General Equation: |
