How can I incorporate TIES into my curriculum?

Environmental Science can and should be incorporated into the high school curriculum. T.I.E.S. meets many different standards and, along with courses in biology, chemistry, earth science, physical science, social sciences, and mathematics, can be used by one or many teachers as an interdisciplinary study. Teachers have found that T.I.E.S. may be used within the classroom  or as an independent project.

The compelling aspect of T.I.E.S. is the use of a story format as the basis for investigation of environmental hazards. The story is being told through webquests, which were developed to help direct website users through web pages in an interesting and organized manner.  Each story takes place in a fictitious county named Ramford. Ramford County encompasses a variety of characteristics that points to a certain environmental hazard that's being investigated. One of the most important aspects of T.I.E.S. is that students are required to read about the county of Ramford and then search for real cases and data that may apply to the events taking place in county. The questions and the rubrics, within the process of each webquest, specify where it is especially important to use data and concepts attributed to Ramford County  and/or from actual case studies. A student should always be asking him/herself , "Given the problems and data of this specific situation, am I well equipped to examine the effects of this contaminant in other situations?"
