In the heyday of the war on malaria, widespread DDT-spraying campaigns were used to stifle the pesky bloodsuckers. But DDT played havoc with the environment -- it killed birds
and beneficial insects as well as anopheles mosquitoes. And the
mosquitoes eventually gained resistance .
