Turning Themes on
1. Next to each theme is a Unchecked Box box. 
2.When you click on it a check Checked Box appears in the box. 
3. This turns the theme on, or adds it to the project screen, where it is drawn on the map display.

  IMPORTANT!!! EACH TIME YOUR TURN A THEME ON OR OFF THE MAP IS REDRAWN. THIS TAKES TIME. BE PATIENT.

Turning Themes off
 
1. Click on the box and the check will disappear. Unchecked Box This turns the theme off. 
2. The theme is no longer drawn on the map 
3. The theme is still part of your project, just not drawn.

Making Themes Active
This is different than turning themes on or off
 
1. Make sure the theme you want is on (checked). 
2. Click on the NAME of the theme and the raised rectangle will appear. 
3. The THEME is now active. 
4. REMEMBER only an active theme can be worked with!!!!!!

Customizing a Theme
Why customize a theme?
Use this to change how a theme is shown on the map. For instance to change the color of roads or rivers, or the line thickness, or the symbol shape.
 
1. Turn the theme on  and make the theme active. 
2.Double click on the Name of the theme or double click on the the Edit Legend Button Edit Legend Button on the button menu. 
3. You will see a Legend Editor box. Here you can change the color, make it transparent or change the shape of a symbol or a line thickness using the Color Palette. To work with the Color palette double click on the symbol in the Legend Editor box.

3. You will see a  Palette box. Here you can change the color, make it transparent or change the shape of a symbol or a line thickness. Color Palette Tool Bar

4. To change the color of the legend, double click on the symbol. 
5. A new box ...Palette will appear. 
6. Click on the Paintbrush in the top row. 
7. Choose the new color you want the symbol to be and click it. 
8.Click apply, and the map will redraw with the symbol in it's new color. 
9. Close the legend box by clicking the x in the right hand corner of the Legend Editor.

Making a symbol transparent
1. Make the theme active and checked. 
2. Double click on the symbol for that theme. 
3. The Fill Palette box will appear. Click on the Paintbrush Paintbrush Button
4. For the Foreground click on the box with the x through it Foreground Transparent Box
5. Next to Foreground click on the Down Arrow  arrow and then click Background
6. For the Background click on the box that is white Background Transparent Box
7. Next to Background click on the Down Arrow   arrow and then click Outline. 
8. For the Outline click any color. 
9. Click Apply and watch the map redraw. 
10. Close the legend box by clicking the x in the right hand corner of the Legend Editor X to Close out.
Making a Symbol Transparent

Making the Polygon look different
1. Make the theme active and checked. 
2. Double click on the polygon symbol Pushpin Polygon Tool. Choose the new symbol you wish to use. 
3. Click Apply and wait for the map to redraw using the new polygon. 
4. Close the legend box by clicking the x in the right hand corner of the Legend Editor and Marker Palette.

Changing a line thickness
1. Make the theme active and checked. 
2. Double click on the line symbol. 
3. Click the pencil Pencil-Line Thickness Button
4. Click the line thickness you want. 
5. Click the down arrow Down Arrow by Size and choose the width. 
6. Click Apply and wait for the map to redraw using the line thickness. 
7. Close the legend box by clicking the x in the right hand corner of the Legend Editor and the Pen Palette.
