Making Shapefiles

Why make shapefiles?
So you can create your own files, ones that don't already exist. Maybe you want a stream just in your area, you can make your own shapefile.

One Method to create a shapefile.
1. Make the theme active
2.Click Zoom to active theme button Zoom to Active Theme Button  or 
Click View and click on zoom to theme

3.Click the table button Theme Table Button
4.When the table is open, click on Name in the corner of the table. 
5. At the top of the screen click on the      button, Sort Ascending. The names will be listed in alphabetical order. 
6. Find the name you want to make a shapefile of. 
7. If there is more than one listing of it, press the Shift key on the keyboard and drag the mouse over the names you want. They will appear in YELLOW. 
8. Click the Promote Promote Button button. This moves what is in yellow to the top of the table. 
9. You can close the table by clicking on the x in the upper right hand corner. 
Creating a Shapefile
10. Click on Theme in the Menu Bar. 
11. Click Convert to Shapefile. 
12. Decide what drive and folder you will store the data in. 
13. Name the file. 
14. Click OK. The new file will appear on the legend at the left of the view. 
15. Check it on Check Mark to draw it on the map. 
16. Click  Clear Features Button to clear the features selected (yellow)

Remove a Shapefile
 
1. Make sure the theme is active (raised)
2. Click Edit on Menu Bar 
3. Click Delete Theme. 
4. Click yes
