FTP File Transfer Protocol
CONNECTING:
Connecting to your site is easy. Simply open Internet Explorer and navigate to your portfolio web space. All MSET students have a webspace under http://192.107.108.56/portfolios/
Step 1
Once there, in the location bar of your browser erase the letters 'http' and type in 'ftp' (without quotes). Press the enter key.

You will notice that the content has changed from hyperlinks to folders & files

Next, you must login to the ftp server. Click on File, Login As

Type your user name and password.  Remember to use lowercase for both.

Login Login
To use FTP effectively in IE, you will need to open a second window. This window will point to your local files. To open this window, position your web window so that it takes 1/2 of your screen. Double-click on My Computer, and navigate to the location of your files. (Do NOT open the files - you want to be able to see them only.) Position this window so that you can easily see both the local and remote windows, side by side.
TRANSFERRING:
Step 1. To upload a file to your web site, you need to go to your local window, right-click on the file you want to upload, and select Copy.

Step 2. Next, you will need to go to your remote (FTP) window, right-click on the blank space, and select Paste. Alternately, you can click on Edit and then Paste.  If you are sending a file that had been previously uploaded, it will prompt you to overwrite it.  Click Yes, or Yes to All if sending multiple files.

Alternately, you can drag and drop between the two windows.

LAST: Remember that the above process copies files from your local computer to the server. This process is known as FTP. To view your newly uploaded work, you must navigate through a regular http:// window to your web site and hit refresh (F5) - on every page if necessary!

DOWNLOADING FROM AN FTP SITE:
Sometimes, you will want to download some content from your web site. You can use the same method outline above, except that you would copy from your remote (FTP) window and paste into your local window.

You can also send multiple files, or even folders, by selecting them and then right-clicking on the selection. While you are copying files from one location to another, you may get a pop-up window which lets you know that you are copying files. You do not need to do anything with this window except wait for it to finish (it will close itself).

DELETING:
You may find yourself with content you no longer want on your site. To get rid of these files, you would want to delete them. You can simply right-click on the file and select Delete. Once you have selected delete, you will need to confirm your choice by pressing the Yes button in the pop-up window.
DISCONNECTING:
When you are ready to do this, you should select Close from the File menu.
CREATING A NEW DIRECTORY:
You can create a new directory by right-clicking on any white space, going to New, and selecting Folder. When you do this, the new folder will appear with the name ("New Folder") highlighted. You will need to type in a name for your new folder while it is highlighted, then press the enter key. The entire folder will then be highlighted (not just the name).
RENAMING FILES:
To rename a file or folder, you should right-click on the file and select Rename. The current name of the file will then be highlighted. You will need to type in a new name for your file, including the extension, then press the enter key. The entire file will then be highlighted (not just the name).
