FTP Process in Internet Explorer:

Conventions use in this
tutorial include yellow action boxes, general information boxes and red

You can control this movie from the movie controller bar. You may stop,
pause, rewind or fast forward at any time. |
In this video, we will assume that you are "StudentX" and you wish to upload (FTP) your work to the MSET student server. |
1. First , Make sure you can locate the "My Computer" icon.
Second , locate Internet Explorer

NOTE: This will NOT work in AOL. Please use
Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. If you use AOL, start it and log on as usual. Minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer.

2. Double Click "My Computer"
This is where you have your files stored on your Local Computer. Find your removable drive. Remember that it might be assigned a different letter on this computer.

3. Double Click "Removable Disk"
This is where your local web files are stored.
For the MSET program, all of your work should be stored in a name folder
on your thumb drive. This folder should be named with your last name,
underscore, first initial. Locate this folder and open it by
Double-Clicking.

4. Shrink the window to about 1/2 of the desktop size.

5. Double Click Internet Explorer
|
6. Select the Address text box. Type in www.rst2.edu/masters |
7. Click the Go button
|
8. Select the Portfolios link
|
The
http://mset.rst2.edu/portfolios page appears. Notice that this
address does not contain any Ws.
|
9. Select the folder named "X"
|
Remember that for this exercise, you are 'StudentX' in the 'X' folder on the server. When you are uploading your materials, you will select the letter of your last name, and then your folder.

10. Select the StudentX link to access this student's server space. |
This is the StudentX's portfolio space on the server. Note that you have 2 windows open.
Shrink this window to about 1/2 of the desktop space and position it so
that you can see your local files on the left, and the web portfolio
space on the right.

11. Select the Address text box |
12. Carefully change the
http to
ftp |
13. Click the Go button |
|
14. The Log On As dialog opens. Type in your user name and password. See your instructor if you do not have a user name and password.

15. Click the Log On button.
Notice that the files and folders look like traditional files and folders on your local computer.

16. Double-click
the Brains item on your Local Drive.
Notice that you have the SAME folders on each side.

17. Double-click the Brains folder on the server. |
You will upload (FTP) your files to the server by dragging them from the local computer to the server. Notice : Drag and Drop into White space only. Not on top of any other folder.

You may see a Confirm File Replace dialog if you are uploading the same folder with new changes. Click
Yes to All if you are sure you want to replace all of the files. Click the Yes to All button
|
You are almost done! The actual FTP process is
complete, but as a web designer, you must go and preview your work.

18. Close
all of your open windows. Navigate once again to the MSET web site and
your space. |
19. Select
the Brains link |
20. Select
the webquest link |
21. Click the Refresh button or F5 on your keyboard.
That's It! You have FTP'd your files to the
server!
