This assessment is NON graded.  Please take your time, expect some frustration and don't worry about how much you are able to do at this point.  We will cover this in class. 

You need to download a fictitious website onto a floppy disk. The site is working perfectly on the disk.  You will also be given access to a web space along with a username and password.  You cannot upload to this space, nor should you attempt to change anything.  

Using these tools, answer the questions below based on the following scenario.  Keep your answers short, simple but complete. 

As this is just an exercise, remember that pages, links or images often don't work because:

• The server can't find the file because it is in a different location than it should be
• The server can't find the file because it simply isn't there
• There is a misspelling in the file name

Scenario:

A colleague of yours has just come to you - totally frustrated!  She has been working on a web project for some time now and "all of a sudden" the web is full of glitches: broken links, broken images and pages not found.  She needs your help!  Because you want her to know what to do, but don't want to do the work for her, you are willing to take a look.  You sit down with her and with her website on disk. Together you access her ftp space on the server and you begin to look at each of the problems. 

 Your friend can now "see" all of her folders - including all of the pieces that she is currently working on.  Since they are not ready for the public, she doesn't want people poking around her folders.  She has a portfolio page named portfolio.htm. What can she do to make this file come up automatically when ever someone visits her site?

The first issue is that she used to be able to "see" a list of all of her folders - she can still do it when she FTP's into the site, but not when she is viewing the site. You take a look at her web space online and can only see her portfolio page. The links appear to be working, but she can't remember all of her folders within her site because she can't see them in a folder structure. What is the most likely cause of this situation?  Is this situation good or bad?  What do you tell her so that she can overcome this situation?

All of her work is contained within her folder called "projectone." Her first page is named 'first.htm.'  In this site, she has a link from her first page to her second and third pages.  The links aren't working.  Why not?  Remember to ftp into her site to determine the cause of the problem.  You can also check her diskette version to see what the working link looks like.

Your friend is upset because her images are not showing the way she expects. On her first page, the first vacation image is broken. The third image is there, but it doesn't link to the larger version. What's up? Remember to ftp into her site to determine the cause of the problem.  You can also check her diskette version to see what the working link looks like.

Your friend has uploaded her site several times to her FTP space. Even though she is refreshing her browser, she doesn't see the pages she expects to see.  You know that when you upload a folder, it makes a difference if you drag the files / folders into the white space or right on top of the folder with the same name. You will need to FTP into her site to determine the problem.  What do you tell her?

Hint:  Upon further poking around, you realize that the web site ...portfolios/a/assessments/FTP/projectone/Projectone/projectone/ does work the way she wants it to.

Your friend has a link to a website that isn't working on her first page.  Take a look at her page and determine what the problem is.  Tell her the reason why it isn't working and what she needs to do to correct it.  Since you know she is using FrontPage, tell her the steps to correcting the situation.

Your friend reports that whenever someone bookmarks or adds her site to their Favorites, the words that come up in the Bookmark/Favorites phrase is "Untitled."  What is the reason for this and how can she correct it?

Your friend has noticed that on many professional sites, as she hovers over a picture or image, a balloon pops up that gives a text description of the image.  However, hers doesn't do that and she wants it to.  She has also heard that those balloon pop ups are necessary to make the web site more accessible for folks who use alternate browsers. How can she make those text pop-ups appear?
